Two days ago, another mass-murderer walked into a building at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and opened-fired with a gun. Two students are dead and 9 more critically injured. The terrorist has not been apprehended yet, and “ A Person Of Interest” has been released from custody.
“The carnage followed at least 75 school shootings in the United States this year. So far in 2025, there have been at least 391 mass shootings and 13,929 shooting deaths nationwide,” Gun Violence Archive reports. I’ve added these numbers to once again show that no amount of surreal data will ever change anything about gun violence in America.
College Hill, at the center of Brown University is 4.8 Miles from my house. I know this the same way so many other Rhode Islanders know this. Not just because it’s close, but because Brown is a “City Campus.” It’s also large and monumentally entwined with our community. Brown University Health is the new owner of Rhode Island Hospital; one of the largest employers in the state. For a few years, I held a student co-op job at Brown. I worked there. I met life-long friends there. I sailed with people who went to school there and were employed there. I had a roommate for a few years that I met through Brown. For years, I walked past buildings all the time and still never realized they were Brown Dormitories. Even with little time spent on the East Side, distinguishing Brown-owned Buildings from small business owner buildings and landmarks became excessively blurred. We ate breakfast on Brooke Street. We went to the movies and ate Chinese food on Thayer Street. We watched Basketball and Water Polo on Hope Street. We bought our bikes and art supplies off Wickenden Street. We listened to the college radio station; WBRU 95.5 growing up. We stood on the front lawns of historic homes and buildings and watched Street Luge for the X Games rip down steep and winding roads. College Hill, Brown and the East Side are everywhere and sometimes seemingly all the same.
It was many of these thoughts that hit me when I began to grab my coat and walk out of the house. It’s winter here, I had dark blue pants and a dark shirt on. My glasses are dark-lens shades that would shield me from the bright sun and snow cover today. A dark blue hat. I began to put my arm into the sleeve of my dark black construction jacket, when the thought hit me; I seemed to look just like a photo and description of “a person of interest” that the Providence Police released the day before. It turned my stomach. I was heading to the East Side to buy some art supplies. The last thing I wanted to do was to remind my local community about the recent horrors. Yes, many in the world are dressed similarly these days, but I wanted better for my community, to ease their angst in any way I could. I grabbed my bright orange ski jacket instead. I have lived most of my life without a cell phone, so when I thought I had left it at home and knew I would be back in 20 minutes, I wasn’t concerned. Suddenly I thought, “what if I have to call 911, or report suspicious activity? I pulled to the side of the road to check my deep pocket. Obviously, these thoughts didn’t sit well with me, as small and insignificant as they may be in the grand scheme of things; nor would they with any human being with a shred of decency.
That leaves us with “A person of NO interest.”
Let’s just skip straight to it. There is a certain person in Washington, D.C., who is supposed to be the “leader” of the country. Instead of me wasting time and “digital ink,” just supply any and all depraved adjectives you can think of. Let’s call him “Individual One”……AGAIN!
“Individual One” said about the shootings at Brown University; “Things can happen.”
WTF????“
Things can happen” is what should be said when milk gets spilled, incorrect turns are mistakenly made in a car, or I forgot to buy a Powerball ticket for the “big” drawing. Maybe “some” of you are thinking he just got “misquoted?”
Except he didn’t, and to show he is a “lack of a man” and “A person of NO interest,” he had almost the exact same response last month…to another murder.
”The phrase “things happen” refers to Donald Trump’s dismissal of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a November 2025 Oval Office meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). (Google Supplied).
“Individual One,” is by no means the only person with NO interest, but it does go to show how many people in America have NO interest in solving gun violence.
After all, why have interest, when you can have all the “Thoughts and Prayers” you want.
