Letter M- Metro Madness

This year, I will be doing “something new.” I have chosen a “theme.” I will be blogging about biking adventures. This will include riding tales, travel, stories, absurdity, insanity, adventure, and hopefully a little humor and nonsense mixed in; my favorite topics.

By Zulu Delta

Out of the mouths of some of the world’s greatest cyclists and passionate biking amateurs come the following statements; “I rode in the Tour de France, I rode the Giro d’Italia, I rode across Death Valley, I rode up Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah, I Rode To Montauk. I rode on the Metro platform of the Hollywood/Vine Station in Los Angeles!” WHAT!!!!???? That’s right, it was me; Zulu Delta, Urban Bike Warrior, semi-literate blogger, and intrepid explorer! Well…….the part of the Metro platform anyway; DUH! I mean anyone can ride the Tour de France, (He, He) but the Subway? That takes a demented spirit.

I love the Subway. I have since I was a little boy living in Boston. I have been on the old; Boston, NYC, London, Paris, and the new; Los Angeles, Santiago, Chile, Bangkok, Thailand. There is something great about all of them. I know I have mentioned this before in some previous rant…..ah, I mean blog. It’s like a magical place where a transportation device appears out of a dark hole in the wall and whisk you through a dark space in time to another place. So cool.

We had gone down into the Vine Station after riding our bikes from Downtown to Hollywood for a night tour of Paramount Studios. That was also VERY cool. Not as a Hollywood Ra, Ra kind of thing, but a history of the studio and a history of America. If you will notice in the pictures of the Vine Station, all the ceilings have reproduced movie film reels hanging on them. The place just makes me giddy.

I began to think……(watch out)…….how cool it would be to ride my bike around down here? Why? Because most people don’t even think about riding a bike down here, and it would be so exciting, and I’m probably not supposed to. Yea, I have a love of bucking authority…..even on the occasions where I am “the authority!” For any of you thinking that this seems dangerous, try riding your bike on the streets of Los Angeles, or New York, Paris, or Providence; it can be a little “tricky” sometimes, so in comparison, and empty subway platform at 11 PM is easy.

Wait until I tell you about riding on the rooftop, or down the corridor of the hotel!

Let’s leave with a little music by the British band; The Jam. “Down In The Tube Station At Midnight!”

  1. Good one, Zulu. You rebel. You reminded me – for the first time in years! – of The Jam, one of the best of the high-energy Brit bands (they usually wore very thin ties) from the ’80’s that slashed their way with abandon through every song that they played. The Buzzcocks were another one, The Clash were so good, and of course the Sex Pistols got lots of attention Stateside… My fave Jam song – it also would have worked for today’s blog – was ‘Going Underground’ –
“You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies wash you down and their promises rust”
    Rebels, also.
