Today, I’m going to write about Easter Eggs; but not the chocolate ones associated with the Easter Bunny or the religious holiday of Easter. What I’m talking about are clues left, or marginally displayed in movies, film, or TV shows.

What is a hidden Easter egg?

Easter eggs are secrets, tricks, and jokes hidden in pieces of media, such as TV series, movies, video games, websites, and so on. Usually hard to spot, they might reveal a new detail or clues about the story, or simply pay homage to an inspiration that the creators loved.

Some of you may have known this already, but I only discovered this concept recently. You can now “YouTube” (as a verb to look up) Easter Eggs for your favorite movie or TV show, and it will bring up videos associated with the Easter Eggs you requested. The Eggs sometimes appear as a small picture, a costume detail, or a piece of a prop.

The most amazing example for me comes from a Star Trek episode……..WHAT??!!!? You Zulu? Yes, It’s from Star Trek, Picard. I especially love it because I noticed it as I was lazily watching the series for the second time over, not to mention I found a true connection from the egg to the real world. There is an episode where a Borg Cube (Evil Cyborg Spaceship) has crashed and has been reclaimed by none other than the “Reclamation Authority.” The Borg are no longer able to “Assimilate” anyone.

Assimilation is the process by which the Borg integrate beings, cultures, and technology into their Collective. “You will be assimilated” is one of the few on-screen phrases employed by the Borg when communicating with other species.

The Reclamation Authority works to convert the cyborgs back, as close to the human beings they were before assimilation. In my favorite Easter Egg, there is a very quick shot of a big sign in the background that says;

THIS FACILITY HAS GONE 5843 DAYS WITHOUT AN ASSIMILATION

Why I find this so hilarious is because in almost every industrial and manufacturing facility in the United States, and plenty of places around the world, there exists multiple signs like this that actually say, “This Facility Has Operated (so many days) Without A Lost Time accident.” The funny part being; as if a place such as the Borg Ship, a former instrument of evil and destruction could suddenly turn over a new leaf and become a model for work place safety. Science Fiction? Ah no!

Years ago, there was an industrial facility across the street from my employer that took “reclaimed” glass (reclamation indeed), and converted it back to new glass bottles for beer and fruit juice. The facility had the reputation for the 3 D’s; Dark, Dirty, and Dangerous. One day hoping to change their fate and reputation, they installed a large sign on the front lawn of their processing operation; “This facility Has Worked (so many days) Without A Lost-Time Accident.” While some of the facilities I worked at got into years of safe days, this glass plant never made it past 3 days before they would have an accident and have to start at zero again. 2 months later, they took the sign down off the lawn.

There’s no sense in having your sign or your Easter Egg out there for all to see if it’s something unsavory or ridiculous.

Especially for those of us who love to observe obscure things.
